The Spectrum club at Wadsworth High School is hosting a sock drive from Dec. 2 to Dec. 19, during which students can donate unused socks that will be distributed to a women’s shelter or homeless shelter in the surrounding area.
The Spectrum club exists to promote inclusivity and respect within the school through planned lessons and slideshows, which are typically created by the group’s leader, sophomore Nimiah Mata.
“The club in the past years has been about supporting the LGBTQ+ community, but I want to make it about supporting everyone,” Mata said. “That’s why I decided that I wanted to try and make a drive so it would help all people, not just people of small communities, but every community.”
The drive was set to run for three weeks, and they have already received more support than expected. In the past, the Spectrum club has been smaller compared to other clubs, but Mata says she has been working on inviting more students to join and help.
“I want to teach people about morality, respectfulness, kindness,” Mata said. “And I try to integrate that all in because that’s kind of what our club is about. It’s about accepting people for who they are and what they do. And we have fun days sometimes. It’s mostly just a place to chill and talk.”
Anne Rosenberger, the club’s supervisor, has also been working on reaching out to more students by assisting with tasks such as poster making and distributing announcements for the drive.
“We’ve been wanting to do something to give back to the community in hopes that it would put the club out there more,” Rosenberger said.
For anyone interested in donating unused socks before winter break, take all donations to Mrs. Rosenberger’s room at 2408.
