Opinion: Bruin Rates New Lavender Drinks

Bruin staffers tried the new seasonal lavender drinks featured on Starbucks’ spring menu and reviewed each one. The drinks were released on March 7. The drinks include a matcha with cold foam, a latte, and a frappuccino. Check out how we rated the drinks.

First up was the Lavender Cream Oatmilk Matcha. This drink exclusively comes iced.

The Iced Lavender Cream Oatmilk Matcha includes the traditional matcha base with a lavender cold foam on top. The cold foam had a light lavender taste and meshed well with the matcha flavor. If you prefer matcha this drink has the perfect balance of lavender that is not overpowering.
“The lavender cold foam itself tastes like florally fruit loops,” said Jasmine Krug, senior at Wadsworth High School. “I would definitely get it again.”
Krug rated the drink a seven out of ten. If you are not a fan of coffee, matcha is a better option for you.
If you want to create your lavender drink the lavender cold foam can be put on any drink you choose.
Next, we tried the Lavender Oatmilk Latte.
The Lavender Oatmilk Latte comes in both hot and iced. The hot version of this drink had the most subtle lavender flavor out of the three and tasted very similar to just a normal latte that Starbucks usually keeps on the menu. The iced latte had a stronger lavender flavor compared to the others on the menu. If you are looking for a more subtle lavender taste, we recommend the hot version of the latte over the iced.
“It was a fun drink, but I’m not sure if I would get it again,” said Davy Derr, a sophomore at Wadsworth High School.
Derr thought that the latte was unappealing, but tasted better than it looked.
After the Oatmilk Latte and Matcha, we tried the Lavender Crème Frappuccino.
The Lavender Crème Frappuccino was by far the sweetest drink with the most lavender flavor.
“It was very refreshing and sweet, but I don’t think I would get it again,” said Nora Cartwright, senior at WHS.
It had a very herbal, plant-like flavor, which we were not fans of. If you are more of a fan of the sweeter drinks, like the Starbucks’ frappuccinos, this would be the best option for you. The drink is a pretty, light purple color and comes with whipped cream. This was our least favorite out of the three.
Overall, we thought the featured lavender drinks were fun to try, however, they were not something we would order again. If you typically enjoy Starbucks’ more festive or seasonal drinks, you would enjoy the lavender drinks.
These drinks, along with a new addition, the Lavender Oatmilk Chill, are starting off Starbucks’ spring menu. These drinks will be in stores until supplies last.
