Once again, Wadsworth High School celebrated our community members with a Veteran’s Day assembly. Students from all aspects of the school helped make this day special for our guests.

The Interact Club worked hard on making sure that the school was able to provide a warm, welcoming to all veterans who had chosen to attend.Members did so by painting the windows of the commons and coloring the sidewalk with chalk to create a visually appealing and patriotic entrance. The day of the assembly, they arrived early to line the school’s driveway with American flags and greeted guests at the door.

Student Council also helped assist and honor our veterans by serving breakfast. They spent time talking to the veterans in the cafeteria and later helped them into the gym where the assembly was held.

The choir department and band students of WHS opened the ceremony by singing and playing along to “The Star Spangled Banner” and “My Country ‘Tis of Thee.” The band also played “Salute to America’s Finest,” asking that the veterans stand up when they heard the song of their branch played.

Once the Wadsworth Color Guard presented the colors in a silent display, students took the stage and gave heartfelt speeches relating to what Veterans Day meant to them. One student remarked that the love in which we share with one another does not end during wartime.  Her grandparents had grown fonder of their love for one another through mailed letters, and felt that more gestures of love towards our veterans are something worth sharing.

Other students spoke of the job of veterans and how hard it must be to be an American Soldier. But one moment that really stood out to students was when Brendan Phillips, 11, performed “I’m Proud to be an American.” While Phillips sang, the choir teacher, Mrs. Davis played the piano for him and a slideshow provided as a backdrop.

The annual assembly hosted at Wadsworth High School was a success and the tradition of honoring our veterans will continue for years to come.
