“Scream 7” was released on Feb. 26, 2026, and it fell flat in fans’ expectations. It has the lowest Rotten Tomatoes score of any movie in the Franchise, with 33% as of March 2. Not only that, but it also has an IMDb rating of 6.5/10.
The film’s acting was mediocre at best, the plot was incredibly boring, and with a runtime of 114 minutes, it’s difficult to watch in one sitting. Kevin Williamson, who worked on the original “Scream,” returned for this movie. Even with him directing, he unfortunately could not prevent it from being poorly executed. In the beginning, the movie tries to appeal to the nostalgia of its predecessors, but that’s discarded halfway through. The rest of the plot is confusing and lacks substance, and most scenes feel like filler.
“I really didn’t like it [the film],” said WHS junior Lennon Schnell. “The ending was lackluster, and everything felt so boring.”
Ghostface, the killer, appears on screen significantly more than in the last few installments of the franchise, which I did appreciate. But compared to the rest of the film, this feels like a distraction against the very rushed plot.
“I’ve seen all of the other ‘Scream’ movies, but this one just didn’t do it for me,” said WHS senior Seldon Ketchmark. “I just don’t think this even needed to be made.”
Director Kevin Williamson reported to Deadline that although “Scream 8” is not confirmed, ideas are being thrown around for another movie. But making another film is not necessary at all. The franchise is long past its prime, with the first movie released in 1996, nearly 30 years ago. Since then, ratings and audience feedback have only continued to plummet. These poor reviews should signal to the directors that the general public is done with the “Scream” franchise. Compared to the other films in its franchise, “Scream 7” is the worst.
