A national championship will be brought home to Wadsworth when Brady Long returns after winning National Grocers Association’s Best Bagger in Las Vegas earlier this month.

The 23-year-old Wadsworth Alumni won a $10,000 grand prize after beating out 22 other baggers at the National Grocers Association’s Best Bagger championship at the Mirage Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

Long is currently enrolled at the University of Akron and is studying accounting.  He says that he’ll spend his $10,000 check on a new car, as he currently drives a 1996 Dodge Van.

Long has been ranked the top bagger in the state for two years, but didn’t place at the national event last year.  

“This year, I was a lot more confident,” Long told the Medina Gazette.  After winning the first round of the competition, Long went on to win a “Bag off” with the final five contestants.  The contestants are graded on technique of bagging, speed, and weight distribution throughout their bags.  They are also judged on their appearance, style, and attitude.

The competition has been held since 1987, and was designed to give recognition to the hard working grocery baggers.  It is sponsored by National Grocers Association and 23 baggers from across the country are invited.

Congratulations to Brady, who competed with great enthusiasm, and to all our Best Bagger participants who showcased their passion for excellent customer service,” said CEO Peter J. Larkin about the competition.
