Pro’s and Con’s of CCP classes

Pro’s and Con’s of CCP classes

OPINION BY LINDSAY CARR

College Credit Plus classes (CCP) are offered at the high school and are typically taken by juniors and seniors. CCP is a program that allows high school students to take college level courses and get credit at both the high school and at the college that is providing the classes. Courses at Wadsworth High are provided by the University of Akron.

The CCP program offers many benefits and few disadvantages for students and are very different from any other courses solely taught by WHS teachers.

Pro’s:

1.Classes are only three days a week

Classes are offered Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

2. Akron’s school year is much shorter

CCP classes start in the beginning of September and end a week earlier than WHS in the first semester. The second semester starts mid-January and ends in the beginning of May. This gives students weeks for a break from their college classes while they are still in school.

3. Students can go home

If students have a study hall, late arrival, early release or multiple college classes in a row, then students can leave whenever they do not have class.

4. Class gets cancelled

Ever heard of class being cancelled in normal high school? Nope, that because that never happens. Since Akron classes are college classes, students typically get an email twice a semester saying they do not have class for the day.

“Getting that email that I can sleep in a little longer is the best feeling ever,” says Emily Dennison,11.

5. College and high school credit

Students have the option to take three types of college classes that give both high school credit and college credit. Dual enrollment means it is taught by a normal WHS teacher and is taught five days a week. Normal CCP classes are taught three days a week at WHS. Lastly, students have the option to drive to the Akron or Wayne Campus to take college classes not taught at WHS.

6.Free college credit

It is well known that college is very expensive, and WHS pays for the Akron tuition and allows students to get college credit earlier for free. Taking enough credit hours through CCP can allow students to enter college as sophomores, saving them thousands.

Pro’s/Con’s:

1. Students can skip class.

This in itself is a pro and a con.

Con’s

1. The material is difficult

Students have to consider that a higher work ethic is required to take these classes.

2. It is harder to communicate with professors

Professors are only at the school during the periods and days that they teach, and that can often make it difficult to meet with your professor if needed.

3. Akron classes take priority

If WHS has a delayed start or assembly schedule, students have to miss their normal classes or come in early in order to follow the normal Akron schedule.

4. Not all schools accept CCP credit

Most prestigious or out-of-state colleges do not accept CCP credits. For those who know their dream school does not accept the credit, they are better off taking AP classes.
