The Bruin has decided to make its print issues free for all high school students next school year. This means that every student has an opportunity to get and read the school newspaper throughout the year. Along with this decision, The Bruin welcomes in the new staff for the 2019-2020 school year.

On May 2, at the Fine Arts Assembly, the new Editor-in-Chief was announced. The 2019-2020 school year’s editor in chief will be Halle Schaeffer. As the new Editor-in-Chief, Schaeffer has plans for the 2019-2020 Bruin.

“Something I would look to change might just be the the organization behind The Bruin and how we choose to delegate work and deadlines,” said Schaeffer.

This past year’s Editor-in-chief position was held by senior, Marraya Youngblood, who led the Bruin through a complete design change of the paper to a more magazine like layout.

With the decision to make the newspaper free to students comes the need for patrons and advertisers to keep it running. It will no longer be able to pull in the money from sales to the students. In the past, students could subscribe for the year for $5 or they could pay for each individual issue for $1. The Bruin prints 9 issues a year.

Along with Bruin being free next year, the Bruin welcomes in new staffers made up of current sophomores and juniors. With the editorial positions opening up, current juniors who have been in the staff for at least one year had a chance at one of these positions.

The staff from last year are not the only ones with plans. Next year, the new staffers have changes that they would like to make as well.

“I’m most looking forward to sharing people’s stories and being able to work with more controversial topics,” said Lauren Satink (11).

The next issue of the Bruin will be printed in October of 2019.
