Doja Cat released her fifth studio album, “Vie,” on Sept. 26, 2025. At approximately 50 minutes in length with 15 songs, this album marks a great comeback from her previous work.
“Vie” has a fun, upbeat sound that is definitely inspired by 1980s pop and rap music. The lyricism is entertaining, and the production quality is significantly better than that of all her previous work. Songs on “Vie” are upbeat and catchy, with some of the best tracks including “Cards,” “Take Me Dancing (feat. SZA),” “AAAHH MEN!” and the lead single “Jealous Type.”
The opening tracks are the best on the album. “Cards” and “Jealous Type” are incredibly strong openers, followed by “AAAHH MEN!” and “Couples Therapy.” Songs flow seamlessly into one another when you listen, which is truly amazing. SZA was also a wonderful feature on “Vie.” She sang on “Take Me Dancing” and has sung several other songs with Doja in the past, and it is clear to see why. Her voice and music style add a wonderful sound to an already amazing song. Other standout songs include “Gorgeous” and “All Mine.”
“‘All Mine’ is my favorite song,” said Avneet Singh, a Wadsworth senior. “I love the instrumental, and the chorus was super catchy.”
“Vie” has received mixed reviews from critics, with one of the biggest being that it represents a significant shift from her last studio album, “Scarlet.” “Scarlet” was released in 2023 and was controversial due to Doja’s promotion of the music, as well as the noticeable change in sound. “Scarlet” was much more rap-heavy than her previous work. Doja had stated she did not want to make another pop album and found making pop music boring. So, fans were expecting another rap album from Doja, but she released another pop album instead.
However, “Vie” did not disappoint. It is clear she is finding her sound, and she has done it with “Vie.”
“By the time she reaches the album’s concluding track ‘Come Back,’ there’s no question that she’s rightfully earned her spot at the top of the pop-rap hierarchy,” Variety stated in their album review.
The album is a wonderful example of how to correctly blend hip-hop and pop music together. It has launched Doja back into the spotlight, and the numbers prove it. “Vie” gained 13 million Spotify streams upon release, making it the biggest album release of that weekend.
“I think that this is her best album so far,” said Rebecca Gasser, a Wadsworth senior.
