Wadsworth Grizzlies senior wide receiver and defensive back Calix Lemp has committed to the United States Air Force Academy to play Football for the Air Force Falcons.
Lemp led the Grizzlies in all receiving stats in 2024, catching 42 balls for 730 yards and 11 touchdowns, while also being a defensive back for the Grizzlies.
Recently, Lemp was voted as one of the captains of the football team.
“He is a very lead-by-example kind of guy,” said Justin Todd, the Grizzlies’ head football coach.
Going into his senior year, Lemp had a total of 21 collegiate offers, including Harvard, Army, Dartmouth, and many more Division 1 programs.
Lemp has been a varsity starter since his freshman year at Wadsworth. It is not usual that a freshman goes to varsity so quickly, but Todd believed that Lemp was different from your average freshman.
“We were not sure if he could mentally handle it,” Todd said about Lemp’s freshman season. “He showed us really early on that he absolutely could.”
Unlike a lot of football players being recruited at the Division I level, Lemp did not want to choose a college based on the football team.
“I want to set my future up and make sure I have a good education,” Lemp said.
Lemp believes that he can play wide receiver and defensive back at the next level. This is not that common for Division I football players, as most commit to play only one position.
“I’ll go there and definitely try both sides of the ball,” Lemp said.
Lemp is already off to a strong start to his senior campaign with 209 receiving yards and three touchdowns. After he graduates, he will go to Colorado Springs to begin his college football journey as an Air Force Falcon.
