Safety Town is a summer experience in which a kindergarten student of Wadsworth City Schools can learn about transportation safety, basic memorization skills, and how to live a safe educational career in the real world, and they are now accepting registrations for this summer.
Safety town consists of two weeks of learning, week one being July 14-17. Week two is July 21-24. If a kindergartner wishes to sign up for Safety Town 2025, they need to get together with their parents and sign up through a Google form on their website. Admission costs $25 per child, and they can choose which week they would like to attend. Safety Town is located in Isham Elementary School, where the event lasts for two and a half hours a day, for four days. According to their website, they do not accept walk-ins on the first day, so the child must be registered prior to the event.
April Jira, the director of Safety Town for five years, loves the program. She thinks the event is very important for children to be able to function in a progressive learning and real-world-like environment. Jira feels that the information is very vital, such as the basic life skills, regarding address and phone number memorization for example, in which the student will use them frequently for signing up for programs and educational benefits in the future.
The children do not just learn from teachers, they get to experience and learn from these situations hands-on.
“Every child who has the opportunity should attend Safety Town,” Jira said “It offers a valuable foundation in safety skills, like traffic awareness, stranger danger, fire safety, and how to call 911, through fun, memorable activities designed just for kindergarten students. These lessons help kids feel more confident and prepared as they enter kindergarten and begin exploring the world more independently. While not mandatory, it’s a highly beneficial experience for early childhood development.”
Nate Ball, an assistant teacher and an officer involved in Safety Town, has been working with Jira for two years.
“I believe that the children seem to be interested in learning safety, especially when it is taught in the interactive and fun way that we strive to do at Safety Town,” Ball said “I recently took over as one of Wadsworth School’s Resource Officers and helped with Safety Town, so this will be my second year doing it.”
