The Wadsworth Bruin was fortunate to get an opportunity to talk to Wadsworth alumnus, Evan Dammarell, independent journalist for Right Down Euclid. Dammarell shared his story with the class including how he got to where he is now and some of the choices he made.

Evan Dammarell graduated from Wadsworth in 2011, and while he was at Wadsworth, he joined the Bruin as an elective. His senior year, Dammarell became Associate Editor in Chief.

After Dammarell graduated, he attended the University of Akron in biomedical engineering and majored in mathematics, chemistry and business. During his time at the University of Akron, he was very interested in freelance writing. During his senior year at Akron, he joined Hashtag Basketball, a website covering rankings and results of NBA teams.

At Hashtag Basketball, Dammarell covered the Charlotte Hornets, Oklahoma City Thunder, Team USA and the CAVS. He also joined another freelance site, called King James Gospel. Despite his conflict between quitting his major and starting a new career in freelance, Dammarell stayed in engineering for several years after graduating.

Dammarell applied for Forbes Magazine because he thought the value of Cleveland needed to be represented more throughout the nation. Dammarell was then hired by Forbes Magazine to cover the CAVS and NBA in general.

His interest in writing about the CAVS grew even more when he became an editor for Fear the Sword, where fans can get all the information about the CAVS that is needed. Dammarell also began doing podcasts with Chris Manning on Locked on CAVS, where he also became co-host after a couple years. Locked on CAVS is a daily look on the CAVS that keeps you up to date with the team. Locked on Cavs is also bought by WKYC, the TV station.

Dammarell then applied to Facebook Boards, to get the information he needed for his new journalism business called Right Down Euclid. Right Down Euclid is a website where Dammarell wanted to change the way Cleveland sports was covered.

“I open the door for you to invite you in with my Cavs coverage, with my Browns coverage, with my soon to be Guardians Coverage, my ideas and thoughts and feelings on that and how it affects the community,” said Dammarell.

Dammarell calls it “Bulletin Board News” where everything is put in front of you in a display so you can see all the information and click on it if you are interested in learning more.

“I’m independent right now but the long term goal is to hire a small subsection of a team where I can have someone who covers the Cavs, someone who covers the Browns, and maybe someone who covers music and culture,” said Dammarell. “Right now it’s just me running the show and it’s been really fun.”
